La Sierra University was ranked among the most heterogeneous university in the western United States for the past five years by U.S. News & World Report. As part of the 2007 President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll programme, the Corporation for National and Community Service nominated La Sierra for the Honor Roll with Distinction. The award recognised the near 45,000 hours of service put forth by students at La Sierra. These initiatives encompassed international economic development projects by La Sierra’s World Cup-winning Students In Free Enterprise team, and community projects through La Sierra’s campus-wide Service-Learning program.
On acreage that was originally a part of the Rancho La Sierra Mexican land grant, the Seventh-day Adventist denomination founded La Sierra University in 1922. More than 120 bachelor's, master's, and doctorate degrees are offered by the university today to roughly 2,300 students.
